Critical Business Asset (CBA)

High-Value Organizational Assets

What is a Critical Business Asset (CBA)?

A Critical Business Asset (CBA) is any asset that is essential to an organization's operations, revenue generation, or strategic objectives. This includes data, systems, intellectual property, and infrastructure that, if compromised, would significantly impact the organization.

CBAs are identified through Risk Assessment and Business Impact Analysis (BIA) processes. They are closely linked to the Attack Surface and are primary targets in attacks such as Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) and Supply Chain Attack campaigns.

What is a Critical Business Asset (CBA) used for?

CBAs are used to prioritize security efforts and resource allocation. By identifying critical assets, organizations can focus on protecting what matters most through targeted Security Controls and monitoring.

Protecting CBAs involves implementing strategies such as Zero Trust, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), and strong Identity and Access Management (IAM). It also supports governance initiatives within Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) programs.
