American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

US Standards Development Organization

What is ANSI?

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a U.S.-based organization that oversees the development and coordination of voluntary consensus standards across industries, including cybersecurity, information technology, and engineering.

ANSI does not create standards itself but accredits organizations that develop them, ensuring alignment with international bodies such as ISO and IEC. It plays a key role in harmonizing standards used in frameworks like ISO/IEC 27001 and systems engineering practices.

What is ANSI used for?

ANSI is used to ensure consistency, interoperability, and quality across technologies and processes. In cybersecurity, it supports the adoption of standardized Security Controls, risk management practices, and compliance frameworks.

Organizations rely on ANSI-accredited standards to align with Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) requirements, improve Security Posture, and ensure compatibility across systems and vendors.
