Worm

Self-Spreading Malware Threat

What is a Worm?

A Worm is a type of Malware that can replicate and spread across systems and networks without requiring user interaction. Unlike a virus, worms exploit vulnerabilities to propagate automatically.

Worms often leverage Exploits and weak Security Controls to spread rapidly, making them highly effective in large-scale attacks. They can also serve as delivery mechanisms for additional payloads such as Ransomware or Botnet agents.

What is a Worm used for?

Worms are used to spread malicious code, disrupt networks, and create large-scale infections. They can quickly expand an organization's Attack Surface and enable coordinated attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS / DDoS).

Mitigation requires strong Patch Management, network segmentation, and monitoring through tools such as Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) and EDR.
