Physical Controls

Securing Physical Access to Assets

What are Physical Controls?

Physical Controls are security measures designed to protect physical assets such as buildings, data centers, and hardware from unauthorized access or damage. These controls operate alongside Technical Controls and Administrative Controls.

Examples include access badges, biometric systems, surveillance cameras, and secure facility design. Physical controls are essential for protecting infrastructure that supports critical systems and data.

What are Physical Controls used for?

Physical controls are used to prevent unauthorized physical access, theft, or tampering with systems. They are critical for safeguarding Critical Business Assets (CBA) and ensuring operational continuity.

Organizations implement physical controls as part of a Defense in Depth strategy, ensuring that even if digital controls are bypassed, physical barriers remain in place. They also support compliance with standards such as ISO/IEC 27001.
