Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)

What is SDLC?

The Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) is a structured process used to design, develop, test, and maintain software systems. It defines phases such as planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.

Modern SDLC approaches integrate security practices, often referred to as Secure SDLC (SSDLC), aligning with frameworks such as NIST SP 800-160 and principles like Defense in Depth.

What is SDLC used for?

SDLC is used to ensure that software is developed in a controlled, efficient, and secure manner. It helps organizations reduce Vulnerabilities, improve code quality, and manage risk throughout the development process.

Security teams integrate controls such as Threat Modeling, Security Control Validation, and Web Application Penetration Test into the SDLC to strengthen Security Posture and reduce exposure to Exploits and Zero Day Vulnerabilities.
