Indicators of Attack (IOA)

Behavioral Threat Detection Signals

What are Indicators of Attack (IOA)?

Indicators of Attack (IOA) are behavioral patterns that suggest an attack is in progress or about to occur. Unlike Indicators of Compromise (IOC), which focus on known artifacts, IOAs emphasize suspicious activity and attacker behavior.

Examples include unusual privilege escalation attempts, abnormal network communication, or lateral movement within a network. IOAs are critical in detecting advanced threats such as Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) operations.

What are Indicators of Attack (IOA) used for?

IOAs are used for proactive threat detection and early response, enabling organizations to identify attacks before significant damage occurs. They are commonly leveraged in Threat Hunting and advanced detection platforms such as EDR and XDR.

By focusing on behavior rather than signatures, IOAs improve detection of unknown threats and zero-day attacks. They play a key role in strengthening Security Posture and supporting real-time Incident Response (IR).
