Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

Acceptable System Recovery Time

What is Recovery Time Objective (RTO)?

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) defines the maximum acceptable time required to restore systems, applications, or processes after a disruption. It sets a target for how quickly services must be recovered.

RTO is determined through Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and is closely related to Critical Business Processes (CBP).

What is RTO used for?

RTO is used to guide disaster recovery strategies and ensure that recovery processes meet business requirements. It influences infrastructure design, redundancy, and Incident Response (IR) planning.

Organizations use RTO alongside Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Maximum Tolerable Downtime (MTD) to build resilient systems and align recovery capabilities with operational priorities.
