What is Scareware?

Scareware is a type of Malware that uses fear tactics to trick users into taking harmful actions, such as installing malicious software or paying for fake security solutions. It often appears as alarming pop-ups or fake alerts claiming that a system is infected.

Scareware relies heavily on Social Engineering and is commonly delivered through compromised websites or malicious advertisements.

What is Scareware used for?

Scareware is used to manipulate users into downloading Malware, disclosing sensitive information, or making fraudulent payments. It often serves as an entry point for more serious threats such as Ransomware or Spyware.

Mitigation involves User Awareness Training, browser security controls, and endpoint protection solutions such as Antivirus (AV / NGAV) and EDR.
