What is Mean Time to Failure (MTTF)?

Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) is a metric that measures the average time a non-repairable system or component operates before failing. It is used to assess the lifespan and reliability of assets.

Unlike Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), MTTF applies to components that are not repaired but replaced after failure.

What is MTTF used for?

MTTF is used to estimate system lifespan, support procurement decisions, and improve infrastructure planning. It helps organizations understand risk exposure related to system failure.

In cybersecurity and resilience planning, MTTF contributes to assessing system reliability and complements metrics such as MTBF and Mean Time to Recover (MTTR).
