What is MITRE ATLAS?
MITRE ATLAS is a living knowledge base of adversary tactics and techniques targeting AI-enabled systems. The MITRE ATLAS threat framework documents observed and plausible behaviors across the AI lifecycle. It is distinct from MITRE as an organization and from MITRE ATT&CK, whose broader enterprise knowledge base is not centered on AI-specific threats.
ATLAS structures adversary behavior into tactics and techniques and connects them with case studies, mitigations, and supporting references. Its coverage includes attacks on models, data, software dependencies, interfaces, and operational use. It helps describe how conventional security failures can combine with AI-specific weaknesses, but it is not a complete control catalog.
What is MITRE ATLAS used for?
Security teams use ATLAS for AI threat modeling, red teaming, security assessment, detection engineering, and mitigation planning. Shared identifiers and behavior descriptions help architects, data scientists, defenders, and risk teams analyze attack paths, design exercises, map observations to known techniques, and identify defensive requirements across development and deployment.
For leaders, ATLAS connects MITRE research, MITRE ATT&CK, Threat Intelligence, and Security Research with governance of AI-enabled capabilities. Because the knowledge base evolves as evidence and techniques change, coverage should not be treated as exhaustive. Organizations still need system-specific assurance, secure engineering, monitoring, incident response, and risk decisions beyond the catalog.
