Data Owner

Definition

what is a Data Owner?

A Data Owner is a person or entity accountable for the overall management and safeguarding of a specific data set within an organization. They determine who has access to the data, assess its value, and ensure that it is handled appropriately.

The Data Owner plays a critical role in making decisions related to data classification, sharing, and retention including assigning sensitivity levels to the data, establishing access controls by defining who can access the data and the extent of their access, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations and determining the necessary security measures.

It’s important to note that while the Data Owner has these responsibilities, they do not implement them directly; this role falls to the Data Custodian.
